Buy What Fits Your Work

  • Only checking for a clog? You may not need a handheld locator.
  • Inspecting short indoor drains? You probably do not need a 300 ft cable.
  • Working through several bends? A thinner, more flexible cable may perform better than a rigid one.
  • Inspecting standard residential lines? A crawler or 360° camera is usually unnecessary.

The best sewer camera is the one that fits the pipe and the job—not simply the model with the most features.

  • 512 Hz sonde and locator option
  • Stronger cable for longer pushes

Recommended models:

A professional 9 mm cable system designed for longer, relatively straight sewer lines where pushability and bright pipe illumination matter.

4. Advanced & Large-Pipe Inspection

For specialized pipe-wall inspection, varied pipe sizes, and municipal or industrial work.

What to prioritize

  • Multiple viewing angles
  • Long-range or motorized movement
  • Professional controls and reporting

Recommended models

S820TSMKTR — Best for Multiple Pipe Sizes

Two camera-and-cable systems in one unit: a 17 mm head with a flexible 5 mm cable and a 23 mm head with a stronger 7 mm cable.

S810ASMKT360 — Best for Detailed Pipe-Wall Inspection

Switch between front and side views, rotate the camera automatically or manually, and add on-screen notes during detailed inspections.

U99360 — Best for Large Pipes and Municipal Work

A motorized crawler with a 360° rotating camera for large-diameter pipelines where a standard push camera is not suitable.

FAQs

Choose a camera head that fits the smallest section of pipe you will inspect. Also consider the bends: a smaller head and flexible cable are generally easier to guide through narrow or turning lines.

It depends on the job. A 5 mm cable is more flexible for small pipes and bends, a 7 mm cable balances flexibility and pushability, and a 9 mm cable is better for longer, relatively straight runs.

Measure from the nearest access point to the farthest area you need to inspect. Around 100–165 ft is suitable for many residential jobs, while longer commercial or municipal lines may require 230 ft or more.

Choose self-leveling if you want the image to remain upright while the camera moves. It is especially useful for plumbers, home inspectors, and anyone sharing inspection footage with clients.

The sonde is the transmitter inside the camera head. The handheld locator is used above ground to receive that signal and find the camera’s position. A product with a sonde does not always include the locator.

Yes. That depends on the pipe diameter, bend radius, camera-head size, and cable flexibility. A small camera head with a 5 mm cable is generally better for tight bends, but no camera can be guaranteed to pass every fitting or obstruction.

A compact camera such as the S5517DC is suitable for basic household checks. For smaller pipes that also require self-leveling, distance measurement, or locating, consider a 5 mm professional system.

For regular residential work, prioritize self-leveling, a meter counter, DVR recording, and 512 Hz locating capability. Models such as the S850DSTKM or mobile S860DSTKM suit general professional inspections; specialized jobs may require dual-camera, rotating, or crawler systems.
