Sanyipace Plumbing Camera: The Budget Option That Actually Works?

Hello, beautiful people! I hope you're doing well today. I'm excited to share my very first experience using a plumbing camera to inspect an underground sewer line.

This marks a new chapter in my plumbing career, as I begin shifting away from installations and toward plumbing maintenance and drain inspections. In this review, I'll walk you through how the Sanyipace S8417D plumbing camera performed during a real-world job, and whether it's worth considering for your own toolkit.

Why I’m Exploring Drain Diagnostics with a Plumbing Camera

A few months ago, I decided to take on fewer installation jobs and focus more on service and maintenance. It’s more sustainable, and frankly, more satisfying when you can help customers identify hidden issues—especially with tools like a sewer inspection camera.

Although I’ve been in plumbing for years, I’d never used a plumbing camera before. That changed when Sanyipace kindly sent me their S8417D model to test out. It was the perfect opportunity to dive into drain diagnostics and explore how this kind of technology works in the field.

Unboxing the Sanyipace S8417D Plumbing Camera

The model I received is the S8417D plumbing camera, which comes with a 30-meter cable. It’s also available in 20m and 50m options, but 30m is ideal for most home inspections. 

In the box, you’ll find:

• Two protective shields

• Plug-in charger

• 16GB SD card

• O-rings and accessories

• Durable cable reel with sturdy metal frame

Screen, Video & Audio Features

It has an IPS screen and the picture is excellent. You can see a very clear image of the sewer, and the time and date are also displayed on the screen. The battery shows the remaining time. The charger is located on the insertion side. It comes with a 16 GB SD card.

For now, we just want to shoot some video. Press “OK” and a red blinking recording symbol will appear on the left side. You can see how long we've been recording for. Not only does it record video, it also records audio. The audio is very clear, which is nice. You never know when you're going to need to record sewer sounds. Who knew you could also adjust the LED light on the front of it. Like I said, this is the first time I've used it, so I'm just getting used to it.

As a beginner with plumbing cameras, I appreciated how intuitive the controls were. I didn’t need to study a manual for hours to get started.

Build Quality and Functionality in Real Use

The camera head comes in a little box with the camera, two shields, the plug charger and some o-rings. The guards clip onto the camera. I find it convenient to put it on top.

The unit itself is made of sturdy metal. The bottom has sturdy plastic feet that are very lightweight. The cage is also made of metal. The reel is a nylon material. I'm not 100% sure what material that is, but the camera head is made of metal. It is also very flexible and great for turning.

Field Test: Real Sewer Line Inspection

This plumbing inspection camera can pass through narrow 20mm pipes and make smooth turns in 50mm elbows. It also easily handles S-traps and P-traps in pipes over 50mm in diameter.

Let's try, we're going to put it here, this one on the left hand side goes to the customer's house, this one in front of us I think goes to the whole set of houses on the other side. So let's try and put it in the right place before it starts pouring. Remember, when you're working on the drain, always wear gloves.

We push the camera in and get a very clear image. Importantly, the camera is waterproof, so you don't have to worry about the camera getting damaged if a customer flushes the toilet or if someone flushes the toilet in the street. Let's go a little bit further and see what we can see, you never know you're going to see a mouse down there.

Let's try to move forward with the camera. I didn't know where we were going because it was raining outside and I was soaked to the bone, it was a little hard to operate with one hand.

Final Verdict: A Reliable Entry-Level Plumbing Camera

At first impression, it looked really good, a good quality, high-quality camera. I don't need anything fancy or a singing and dancing machine. I just need a basic camera that I can buy to do what I need to do, and this particular model retails for $270, which seems like a great value for money compared to the expensive cameras on the market. As an entry-level camera, I highly recommend it. I'll continue to use it to assist me in the future when I run into some drainage issues, or perhaps a clog somewhere in the underground drainage system.
